Formerly known as the Overwatch League, the Overwatch League has been in the works for years. It’s been planned since late 2017, and the cost of funding the league has been a hot topic of discussion. The Overwatch League officially announced a spring start date, with season one running from April to June, and the plan is to have a second season starting in the fall. This time, Blizzard plans to have a built-in schedule for the league.
According to Overwatch League commissioner Nate Nanzer, plans are in place for Overwatch 2 to be in the hands of Overwatch League pros by April 2022, but does this mean the game is actually playable at the time of this projected start?
If you were paying attention to Blizzard Entertainment CEO Mike Morhaime’s recent investor call, then you know that Blizzard will not be launching Overwatch League until sometime in April 2022. The reason for that time delay is that Blizzard plans to start with an “early build” of the game, build up the required infrastructure, and then launch the game with all the features it needs.

First and foremost, Spector stated that the league would begin its second season in April 2022. More information regarding the roster development timeframes will be released shortly, and more general information will be released closer to April. Second, Spector retweeted Dot Esports writer Liz Richardson’s statement that the next Overwatch League season would “launch on an early build of Overwatch 2.”
The current OWL season is nearing the end, with online regional play-in matches culminating to a double-elimination playoff bracket lasting from September 21st to September 24th, and the Grand Finals on Saturday, September 25th.
